I've had AoT2 since the US launch, played about 11 hours and been really enjoying the game. In various threads I've posted various impressions, experiences, and answered a few questions, so I thought I'd drop it all here.To preface: I've never played the first one, and only seen maybe 5 or 6 episodes of the anime a few years back.Just breifly about the game: It follows the story of the first season (as did part one) but I understand it also features a bit of season 2, though the main bulk is season 1.
Natural selection 2 gameplay. You don't need to have played the first game to understand it.I enjoy the story telling through your create a character's eyes. While you are without voice, you do interact with other characters in the game.Gameplay (battlefield) The core gameplay is zipping around the battlefield at breakneck speeds, slaying Titans. There are several points you can focus on: either the nape at the back of the neck for a quick kill, or assorted body parts for materials (they are marked so you know what to go for). Objectives are easy to accomplish, and you have assorted other optional quests during a mission to help others, which grants you resources for in-battle base building. You can set up mini bases in the game at certain points with a simple click of a button. This can give you more resources for when your gas or blade run need replacing, or auto turrets, even manual turrets.
Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle Review. The Final Battle is a very divided experience. On one hand, the Territory Recovery mode features the same blisteringly fast and thrilling action which made Attack on Titan 2 so great. On the other hand, though, the top billing of the expansion is a big disappointment.
I have not unlocked all of the different types of mini bases yet. There are mini-boss type Titans which have stamina where you need to attack certain parts to be able to inflict damage. These can take a while and are a bit of a pain at times! You also have some other items to use like flash grenades + more stuff unlocked later that greatly help, and you can even have other NPCs in your party to assist by telling them where to attack, or even help you if you are grabbed by a Titan.Gameplay (town): Here is where you can talk to the other characters, level up with them by answering simple questions, unlocking skills.
You can buy and sell resources and also craft and upgrade gear from various vendors. So far this still feels incredibly gated and limited at the moment - there are resources I need to upgrade which I've not come across yet. Maybe I need to tackle scout (optional / online missions) to get them or they just won't drop until a certain part of the story. The town is also still expanding as I play with more features added to gamplay. I don't want to spoil but it makes battle far more interesting.Upon completing a mission you receive a rank which can reward you in xp, materials and also improve relations with NPCs.Multiplayer / online: To start off with, the game does feature online co-op, but if you plan on starting with a friend, it doesn't quite work like that.Modes:Distress call: If you are in your town, and an option to send a 'Distress call' is at the bottom of the screen, you can enlist help from a random (no friends / invites sadly).
The other player needs to go to the main menu and choose Another Mode, and access SOS to be able to join a distress call. I think that once you choose SOS if your friend has told you which mission, and you can select it, it might be the only way to co-op together. However, I have a feeling that if you use SOS to help someone, it won't progress YOUR story.Another Mode:This is a separate hub from the main menu where the other multiplayer stuff is.SOS is, as mentioned above, where you find players campaign stories to join.
Often I attempt to but there are no games. Of the times I've found games, I've jumped in easily and helped out.Scout missions: separate missions that can be played online OR offline. Optional quests that once selected, puts you into a meeting room with up to 3 other players.
You can use your created character or any other character for the story that you've unlocked. They have their own levelling system and you can see what stats they already have. Scout missions from what I can see are almost as broad as another campaign!
Several of these early missions are completed in under a minute thanks to the super OP players lol.Assassination mode: 4v4, race to slaughter Titans. I've only done this a few times, plays well, very frantic, but I felt completely out of my depth as advanced users cleaned up in no time. You also have a separate XP and level for this mode. There is a ranking system as well but upon joining the Online hub I always get an error saying it's unavailable.Player progression: You level up during missions, and with each level you can equip more skills. These range from Attack, Health, and some that I don't understand like 'Leadership'. These are attained from the other characters around town between battles.Gear: Coming from Monster Hunter World I was really keen to see what you could create, grind for etc.
So far unfortunately as I mentioned above, I'm still early into the game and I've not seen a lot of room to move, but I know that there are gear set abilities, and stat boosts for gear. There are only 3 categories for loadouts; your blade, scabbard / cannister, and Omni-directional mobility gear (your spiderman hooks, basically). You can even obtain horses with better stats as you play through.Difficulty: The game so far has not been difficult at all. The only times I've failed a mission is if I've picked up an optional mission during battle and neglected other NPCs I should be protecting and they've died. Also, for a free ride, SOS a campaign mission and have OP players come in and basically rinse everything in no time haha.
I think because the game launched in Asia / Japan early, there are players out there with a massive head start.Gripes with the game:The framerate on Switch is 30fps and occasionally gets very sluggish if there is too much on the screen. It certainly doesn't last long. It's only been maybe like 3 times out of all the missions I've done.I had one instance where my character actually disappeared each time I attacked!Buildings don't gracefully collapse like on the bigger console versions. They kinda fade. Another user actually reported one building glitching out and flashing through the whole mission.Draw distance for area's is ok, trees, buildings, and mountains do pop in / out, but the main one is the Titans. Often you need to get quite close before you can see them.
Luckily you can see a red icon represented by their locations so it's not tooooo bad. The worst is actually characters in the town, some of them you need to get really close to see!Titans sometimes tumble around at random and sometimes even 'bury' the parts you are targetting under the ground. I'm not sure if this is specific to the Switch version though.Lack of friends list interaction: real missed opportunity not being able to play with friends.Finishing an online mission disbands the party.
There's no option to stay as a team and select the next mission. Update: having JUST posted that, now it's actually kept us in the same session and continued to the next mission.
So not sure what the deal is here.In summary: I really, really enjoy this game. It's not perfect, I've accepted some of the jank.
I chose the Switch version because it allows me to play on my lunch break at work, and due to family commitments I can only get onto my PS4 after 10pm (which is usually Destiny 2 or Monster Hunter World). (ok not so much Destiny 2 anymore lol).So that about does it. Probably more so as I remember or answer questions I'll add it it. I’ve only read a few chapters of the manga before playing the game, the protagonist is not as annoying as in anime. However I can’t stand the guy during the game nor the Anime (catch up on the two seasons of Anime after beating the story mode of the game)That being said the rest of the cast is fantastic, especially Sasha. Her character really only shines in the Anime.I get the popularity despite the super annoying Erin, maybe people watch for the rest of the crew. I only finish the Anime for Sasha and Ymir. The biggest thing is the story and how it is told.
It is the most well thought out anime i have ever watched by a large margin, characters actions make so much sense ( in that universe ) and the atmosphere is second to none. The story is so good, it is extremely unpredictable and sets up the big scenes beautifully. I dont watch many anime and my top 10 series consists of tv shows only, except for attack on titan which is easily number 1. So to be fair i am a fanboy, but no one can tell me the story is less than spectacular.
